Special permit for oversize vehicles

A special movement permit is required if a vehicle — loaded or empty — exceeds the established limits on weight, axle load or dimensions. The rule applies to every owner: private individuals, sole traders and companies.

When the permit is required

A vehicle counts as oversize or heavy if it exceeds at least one parameter:

• width — over 2.55 metres;
• height — over 4.0 metres from the road surface;
• length of a road train with projecting cargo — over 20 metres;
• weight of a heavy vehicle — over 38 tonnes (the threshold depends on the number of tractor and trailer axles);
• axle load — exceeding the permitted limit by more than 10%.

Divisible cargo — sand, gravel, grain — is a separate case: such a consignment must be split and delivered within the limits, and no oversize permit is issued for it.

What we need to apply

• registration documents for the tractor unit and the trailer;
• the owner's identity document;
• dimensions of the loaded road train: width, height, length;
• gross weight and axle loads;
• a photograph of the road train;
• the route: origin, destination and roads used;
• the axle wheel configuration (single or dual tyres).

What the axle wheel configuration means

It is the number of wheels on each side of an axle — the permitted load depends on it, so the application always asks for it.

• single-tyre — one wheel on each side of the axle, often a wide one;
• dual-tyre — two wheels on each side of the axle.
