OSAGO for a trip abroad is the local compulsory liability policy of the country you are driving to. Kazakhstan's OGPO is not valid outside the Republic of Kazakhstan: at the border and at document checks the officer will ask for a policy issued under that country's own law. For Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan these are separate documents with their own rules and terms, from a few days up to a year. It makes sense to arrange one in advance, before departure: there are queues at the crossings, and without a policy entry is either refused or ends in a fine. The price depends on the country, the type of vehicle and the term, and the policy itself arrives by e-mail — you do not have to print it, showing it on screen is enough.

Is Kazakhstan's OGPO valid in Russia or Kyrgyzstan?
No. OGPO covers liability only within Kazakhstan. When entering another country by car you need that country's mandatory motor insurance.
When is it better to buy the policy — in advance or at the border?
In advance, online. The same policies are sold at the border, but with queues, cash-only payment and no time to compare. An e-policy is issued before departure and arrives by e-mail.
What happens if you drive without a local policy?
A fine at document checks and full personal liability in an accident: you pay all damages out of pocket, and proceedings follow the host country's laws.
